Two undefeated teams look to stay perfect early in Gold Cup play on Thursday, as the host United States takes on the invited Saudi Arabian squad.
The U.S. had some doubts heading into the tournament. While some are skeptical about their durability, they certainly looked good in their first match, beating up Trinidad and Tobago, 5-0, this past Sunday.

Saudi Arabia came in as a relative unknown but certainly got off on the right foot by beating Haiti in the country’s first Gold Cup match on Sunday.
The Americans are still favored to do well in the tournament, though, they have a slightly more depleted roster than in the past. They also have not fared well in international competition since the World Cup three years ago. In 2023, they failed to make it to the Gold Cup final for the first time since 2015. Then, they finished fourth in the CONCACAF Nations League, thanks to a loss to Canada in the consolation match.
Saudi Arabia has fared well in continental competition, having won the AFC Asian Cup three times in its history, with Saudi Arabia also competing in each of the past two World Cups, not making it out of the group stage.
