Water saving in summertime | Daily Echo

Date:

We’re working hard to save water

By having less leaks in our pipes and investing more in our water network, we can reduce the amount of water that gets lost when there are bursts. Getting those leaks sorted is the work of our find-and-fix leakage teams, who are out and about across our region 24/7. We also work with schools – and community groups too – to tell people about easy ways to use water wisely.

Water saving and how you can help us

So that we can make sure there’s enough water to go around, we’re asking you to save a little water, to make a big difference. There are lots of small changes that can save water.

What changes can you make outside?

  • If you’re a keen gardener, there are some great things you can do to keep flowers and plants topped up. Have you thought of installing a water butt to collect rainwater for dry spells, and using a watering can instead of a hose, to get water directly to where it needs to go? And while green lawns look lovely, let your lawn go brown – it’ll soon pick up when wet weather arrives.

So how about some changes for inside your home?

  • Taking shorter showers can really help – cutting a shower by two minutes could save up to 6,000 litres of water every year. Also, by making sure you have a full wash in the washing machine, you could save 2,600 litres of water over 12 months.

  • It’s also about turning taps off – if you keep the tap off while brushing your teeth, you’re probably making an annual saving of over 5,000 litres of water, while fixing a dripping tap can save you up to a bathtub’s worth of water every week.

You can calculate your water use and find out more ways to save water on our website by searching for ‘Save a little water’.

Making a positive difference

Saving water is an important part of the work we do to provide you with water in your home and look after the environment we live in. The choices we make today will protect water supplies now and in the future.  .

Thanks for helping us to save a little water and make a big difference.
