Train take to the stage at Southampton Summer Sessions

Date:

American pop rock band Train headlined the penultimate night of Summer Sessions in Guildhall Square, proving to be a huge hit with Saturday night’s crowd.

Led by lead singer Pat Monahan, the San Francisco band delivered an unforgettable 90-minutes of pure escapism, making the most of their time on the south coast, as fans rejoiced at hearing the band’s catalogue of hits, new and old.

Hey, Soul Sister, Drive By, Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me), and 50 Ways to Say Goodbye were all met with pure joy from the thousands in attendance as Train showed Southampton Summer Sessions why they’re a must-see live band.

Play That Song and Marry Me were met with similar jubilation, the latter of which prompted an actual marriage proposal in the audience, which was met with delight by Monahan who suggested the newly engaged couple wear Train t-shirts on the day of their wedding.

It was an unlikely merchandise plug from Monahan but in fairness to him he’d already gifted a select few members of the crowd free t-shirts that he launched from the stage during the opening minutes of the band’s performance.

Train also performed their newest song – released in the UK just two weeks ago – Brokenhearted, that had the capacity crowd chanting “woohoo” in unison.

Perhaps the most heartfelt moment of the show was Monahan bringing his 14-year-old son, Rock Richard, to perform with the band for three songs, including a cover of Hotel California.

Rising star, Matt Henson supported train at Southampton Summer Sessions on Saturday night, with the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter commanding the stage in his own right and doing a great job of getting the spectators warmed up for a thrilling night of music under the baking sunshine.

Southampton Summer Sessions will conclude this evening as Simple Minds brings an end to annual music event.

Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, The Stranglers, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, Craig David, McFly, The Human League, and Ocean Colour Scene have all performed at this year’s festival.
