Sarisbury Green ‘hit and run’ man appears in court

Date:

Police were called shortly after 3am to Montefiore Drive, where a pedestrian was hit by a dark-coloured car, believed to be an Audi, which did not stop.

A 38-year-old man was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he remains, for treatment of serious, potentially life-changing injuries.

His condition was described as stable by police.

Now, James Varol, 24, of Sawpit Rise, Whiteley, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, failing to report an accident and failing to stop following an accident.

He appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates Court today, where he entered no plea. He will next appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on July 7.

He is on conditional bail not to enter an address, has been given a curfew, and must report to police every week.

Two 15-year-old boys from Fareham and Hedge End have also been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and have been bailed until September 2 and 3, respectively.

On Monday, June 2, two 18-year-old men from Fareham and Hamble were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but were released without charge.

Following the crash, the road was closed throughout the morning for investigations.

Detective believed there had been two people acting suspiciously in the area, trying car door handles shortly before this incident.

Police carried out a number of house-to-house enquiries and were particularly keen to speak to anyone with doorbell or dashcam footage.

Police subsequently released a CCTV image of two teenagers seen at the BP Garage, and later confirmed they had identified the pair.

The police were also keen to hear from anyone who believes they have been a victim of vehicle crime in the area, with a spokesperson saying: “Anyone who believes that they may have seen the car or two people acting suspiciously in the area should call 101 quoting 44250233585 or submit information via our website.”

Anyone with information about the incident and are urged anyone with relevant information to assist them.
