Police patrol Southampton during night out to help women home

The patrols took place last Friday (December 12) from 9pm until after 2am as part of Operation Defender, with officers focusing on hotspots including London Road, Guildhall Square, East Park and surrounding pubs and venues including the Orange Rooms.

Their efforts supported more than 70 women during the evening, many of whom were enjoying nights out in the city in the run up to Christmas.

More than 30 women were found to be on their own during the night.

“Our officers helped many into taxis and waited with others until their lifts arrived, making sure they got home safely,” a spokesperson for Hampshire police said.

“We also reunited women who had become separated from their groups, stepped in to break up fights, and arrested one very drunk and aggressive man to prevent harm to himself or others.

“Alongside this, officers spoke with vulnerable people in the area, safeguarding them and gathering intelligence to support ongoing work.

“It can be hard to measure exactly what was prevented, but there is no doubt our visibility safeguarded multiple vulnerable people, reassured many more, and helped countless leave the city safely after enjoying their night out.

“Our presence helped to keep spirits high while ensuring everyone was supported.”
