The Kano State Government is finalising a series of landmark investment agreements with the Kingdom of Morocco that will focus on renewable energy, agriculture, and commerce as part of a comprehensive economic repositioning strategy.
According to a statement released Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, this development follows a recent high-level investment mission to Morocco led by Kano State Executive Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
During the visit, the Kano delegation held strategic meetings with key Moroccan institutions, including the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), the Moroccan Agency for Africa (OCP Africa), and the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce.

A centrepiece of the agreements is a proposed partnership with MASEN, which will provide technical collaboration to support Kano’s transition to clean energy. MASEN, which manages one of Africa’s largest solar power plants in Ouarzazate with a 500-megawatt capacity, has committed to sharing expertise and technical support for Kano’s ambitious Light-Up Kano Initiative, which aims to generate 2,000 megawatts of solar energy within five years.
The agreement will also address investor identification, financing models, and cutting-edge technologies for energy storage and efficient distribution, with particular emphasis on industrial applications in Kano.
In a parallel development, the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce has expressed willingness to collaborate with Kano State in renewable energy and solid minerals development. This partnership is expected to contribute significantly to the state’s goal of attracting up to $10 billion in investments over the next five years.
The delegation also met with OCP Africa, one of the world’s largest fertiliser producers. OCP proposed new agricultural development projects, including fertiliser blending plants, advanced supply chain systems, and support for smallholder farmers through modern farming technologies.
The Kano delegation included key officials such as Usman Bala, Special Adviser to the Governor on State Affairs; Comrade Ibrahim Garba Waiya, Commissioner for Information; Aisha L. Saji, Commissioner for History and Culture; and Nasiru Sule Garo, Commissioner for Special Duties.
Other officials included Ibrahim Musa, Special Adviser on Health Services; Muhammad Nazir Halliru, Director General of the Kano State Investment Promotion Agency; Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity; Kabiru Magashi, Managing Director of Kano Agricultural Supply Company; and Alhaji Shehu Muhammad Dankadai, Sarkin Shanun Kano, representing the Kano Emirate Council.
