When you hear ‘wellbeing at the workplace’, what comes to mind? Is it just another corporate buzzword?

A box to check for HR compliance? From BettahLife’s perspective, we see it as the foundation of Nigeria’s economic future, where every employee feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive in mind, body and spirit. True workplace wellbeing means moving beyond token perks to create environments where people don’t just survive their workdays but find genuine fulfilment in their contributions. It’s about recognising that the employee who feels psychologically safe, physically protected, and financially secure is happier, more innovative, more productive, and more likely to drive your organisation forward.

Today, BettahLife proudly launches this space, Well-being@Workplace, not just as a column but a vital platform for human resources (HR) leaders, C-suite executives, and thought leaders in people management and development to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of work in Nigeria. In this space, we would be discussing problems and solving them together, with perspectives from those who shape policy, lead organisations, and experience the realities of Nigerian workplaces every day.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association (NECA), the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), Pan Atlantic University and BusinessDay, we have launched the Well-being@Workplace Survey. The survey seeks to bring a new level of attention to wellness and wellbeing in the workplace in Nigeria and promote workplace cultures and environments across Nigeria that support healthy lifestyles, productivity performance and, consequently, impact. The survey would also recognise organisations leading the way in creating supportive and productive work environments.

Following our inaugural survey across Nigerian businesses, this year’s report uncovers critical insights into burnout, workload thresholds, and HR’s role in fostering workplace well-being. On May 30th, these issues took centre stage during our Wellbeing@Workplace Town Hall, streamed live on BettahLife TV YouTube. We presented the findings of the inaugural Wellbeing/Workplace survey, highlighting key trends in burnout, workload pressures, and employee well-being across Nigerian industries. We hope to foster dialogue on actionable strategies for HR and organisational leaders to address workplace well-being challenges. The event was a data-driven conversation on redefining workload and addressing burnout in the Nigerian workplace. We brought together people across levels of the business and executives for frank discussions grounded in our research findings.

Moving forward, this column space will serve as both mirror and compass for Nigeria’s workplace culture. This space is designed to amplify employee wellbeing by elevating the conversation around creating workplaces where employees feel valued, safe, and empowered to work. We will drive practical solutions, moving beyond theory to deliver actionable insights that businesses can implement, from mental health policies to inclusive leadership culture and practices. The column would challenge the status quo by questioning outdated workplace norms and advocate for progressive changes that align with modern employee needs.

Through monthly editions we are bridging the gap between leadership and employees and fostering peer-to-peer learning by providing a platform that shapes best practices in wellbeing at the workplace.

The topics we’ll explore are rooted in research, real-world challenges, and actionable solutions.

These themes have been divided into sections following our dimensions of wellness model and other topics which are designed to spark dialogue, drive policy changes, and offer practical tools for Nigerian workplaces. This is more than a column; it’s a call to action for every stakeholder in Nigeria’s workforce. To executives: Your employees aren’t resources to be depleted but partners to be invested in. To policymakers: workplace wellbeing isn’t a luxury but a foundation of economic growth. To workers: Your health and dignity aren’t negotiable.

Nigerian workers deserve environments where they can flourish without sacrificing their health or family life. The launch event marks the beginning of this journey, not its culmination. Return here monthly as we push for real change, push boundaries, challenge assumptions, and work toward a Nigeria where no worker has to choose between their livelihood and their wellbeing.
