Officers were alerted to two cars colliding on Claypits Lane at 3.24pm, which is not on the detour provided by Southern Water after Hythe Bypass was closed this morning.
The official diversion route takes drivers on a 4.5 mile detour for what should usually be a one-minute drive down the A326.
But a faster path is available via the smaller Claypits Lane.
This is where two-car crash occurred this afternoon. Hampshire police confirmed there had been no injuries.

The stretch of Hythe Bypass which closed at 10.30am today between between Dibden roundabout and Sizer Way roundabout is only approximately 0.7 miles long.
But after the emergency Southern Water works started, the official diversion route from the utility company sends drivers on a ten-minute detour around Dibden Purlieu.
Coming from Marchwood Bypass, drivers should take the first exit on the roundabout away from the A326 and towards Main Road.

A 1.7km journey down this road will then take drivers to Southampton Road.
From here, vehicles should follow it south to Langdown Lawn, and then continue down to Beaulieu Road.
A left on this stretch of street will then take drivers onto Hythe Bypass, where they can continue with their journeys.
Southern Water’s latest update said that it is “unsure how long the fix will take at this stage”.
