Heatwave: Care home manager in Southampton issues advice

Date:

In Southampton, the manager of a care home has issued advice to help keep older people safe during the hot weather.

This comes as temperatures are set to reach 28C in Southampton on Thursday and Friday, and as high as 32C in other parts of the country.

Kirsten Tennant, home manager at Anchor’s Dawson Lodge care home in Southampton, said there are serious risks of dehydration and heat stroke among older people in hot weather.

She added: “We are urging the wider community to keep a close eye on older neighbours and their older relatives who may live alone and are more vulnerable in the heat.

“We recommend older people stay hydrated and keep out of the sunlight as much as possible, particularly during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 11am and 3pm, as UV rays are strongest during these hours.”

Ms Tennant recommends avoiding caffeinated drinks as they are dehydrating, and to make sure to drink cold fluids like water or fruit juice, taking regular sips throughout the day.

As an alternative to hot meals, salads and fruit are suggested, as they will also help keep you hydrated.

“Cold treats such as ice cream, lollies or frozen smoothies and yoghurt are an excellent way of cooling down and increasing hydration,” Ms Tennant added.

“If you do go outside, be sure to cover up with suitable clothing, including an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen.

“Keeping curtains and blinds closed in rooms in direct sunlight and wearing light, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes can also maintain cool temperatures.”
