The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), in collaboration with law enforcement authorities, on Wednesday, sealed the premises of a fraudulent organisation operating under the name Community Crime Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (CCPIN) at No. 214 Aba-Owerri Road, Aba.
In a statement issued by Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at FCCPC, the Commission revealed that the enforcement action followed credible intelligence indicating that CCPIN had been falsely claiming affiliation with the FCCPC. The group misled the public by presenting itself as an “Authorised Consumer Protection NGO” allegedly working with the Commission.
According to the FCCPC, CCPIN had issued unauthorised public notices, claimed joint surveillance operations with the Commission, and solicited consumer complaints through unofficial telephone lines.
During the operation, law enforcement arrested the operator of the facility, Onwuka K. Okorie, who is now in custody at the World Bank Police Station, Abayi-Aba, pending further investigation and prosecution.
Authorities also recovered several exhibits from the premises, including items bearing the FCCPC’s name, logo, and forged enforcement documents.
The Commission firmly disassociated itself from CCPIN, stating that it has not authorised, partnered with, or delegated any enforcement or consumer protection functions to the group or any similar entity. It emphasised that such powers are not vested in NGOS, private organisations, or individuals without formal legal authority.
Members of the public are advised to verify the authenticity of any enforcement actions or communications by contacting the FCCPC directly.
“The FCCPC is committed to operating with the highest level of transparency while ensuring consumer protection and market integrity.
“The public is strongly advised to disregard any announcements, sealing notices, or consumer-related campaigns issued by CCPIN or any of its representatives.
“To verify any enforcement or communication, members of the public can contact the Commission through its hotlines: 08056002020 and 08056003030. Official FCCPC activities and communications can also be verified via www.fccpc.gov.ng or social media handles (@fccpcnigeria),” the statement read.
