The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has appealed for an amicable and out-of-court resolution to the legal standoff between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the litigation as an unnecessary drain on both time and public resources.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Council’s Executive Director, Blessing Akinlosotu, called for calm and urged all parties involved to avoid actions or rhetoric that could escalate the situation, which has drawn widespread public and media attention.
“This issue has unfortunately been turned into a political circus, with many uninformed voices adding fuel to the fire,” Akinlosotu said.
“We are not here to weigh in on the merits of the case, but to advocate for restraint and discourage the prolongation of a matter that distracts from pressing national priorities.”
He stressed that since the case is already before the courts, it is imperative to allow the legal process to unfold without interference or prejudicial commentary, which could influence public opinion or judicial proceedings.
The Council also urged influential leaders and national stakeholders to steer clear of provocative comments that could inflame tensions, while encouraging civil society organisations to focus on nation-building and not be weaponized for political battles.
Reiterating the Council’s dedication to peace and national cohesion, Akinlosotu cautioned that any civil society actor found stoking unrest under the pretext of activism would be subject to disciplinary action.
The group concluded by calling on the judiciary to approach the matter with professionalism and impartiality, ensuring that any ruling is grounded in facts and due process.
