Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal claimed their second UEFA Nations League title with a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout win over defending champions Spain, following a gripping 2-2 draw in Munich.
Captain Ronaldo, who had earlier scored Portugal’s equaliser to make it 2-2, was forced off before extra time with an apparent injury — but watched through tears of joy from the sidelines as Rúben Neves struck the winning penalty after Diogo Costa saved Alvaro Morata’s effort.
The final delivered high drama, as Portugal twice came from behind to deny Spain back-to-back titles. The 40-year-old Ronaldo, playing in what could be his final Nations League appearance, played a crucial role in what will be remembered as a classic.
“I gave everything I had,” Ronaldo told reporters afterwards. “Even when I couldn’t finish the game, I believed in my teammates. This means so much.”
Spain took an early lead through Martín Zubimendi in the 21st minute after a scramble in the box. But Portugal hit back almost immediately, with Nuno Mendes firing home a low-angled drive into the far corner just five minutes later.
Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s advantage before the break, but Ronaldo, always the man for the big moments, latched onto a deflected Mendes cross in the second half and hooked in a volley from close range — his 132nd international goal.
Despite his injury-enforced exit, Ronaldo’s leadership and impact were undeniable. In the shootout, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Nuno Mendes, and finally Rúben Neves all converted their penalties for Portugal, while Costa comfortably saved Morata’s weak attempt.
As Neves’ shot rippled the net, Ronaldo dropped to his knees in tears — an emotional end to an unforgettable night.
The win makes Portugal the first nation to win the UEFA Nations League twice, following their inaugural triumph in 2019.
