Ghana’s 2023/24 cocoa production is set to fall almost 40% below target. Ivory Coast is also seeing similar shortfalls.
Strong seasonal winds and lack of rain are among the main factors, along with smuggling, damage caused by illegal gold mining and swollen shoot disease (virus).
Price for cocoa beans is fixed in Ivory Coast but smugglers get more in neighbouring West African countries.
