Brentford edge Man United 4-3 to keep European hopes alive

Date:

Brentford boosted their chances of European qualification with a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Mason Mount opened the scoring for the visitors with just his second goal for the club, converting a fine cross from Alejandro Garnacho. However, Brentford hit back when captain Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross was deflected into the net by United defender Luke Shaw, who wore the armband for a heavily rotated Red Devils side.

The Bees took the lead six minutes later in controversial fashion, as Kevin Schade rose above Tyler Fredricson to head in his 10th goal of the season. United were left fuming after the goal was allowed to stand despite defender Matthijs de Ligt going down injured during the build-up.

Schade doubled his tally with 20 minutes to go, heading in from close range after a pinpoint delivery by Bryan Mbeumo. Brentford added a fourth through Yoane Wissa, who slotted home after being set up by Michael Kayode.

Garnacho pulled one back with a spectacular long-range strike eight minutes from time, before Amad Diallo scored deep into stoppage time to make it 4-3, setting up a nervy finale. But Brentford held firm to secure all three points.

The defeat leaves Manchester United languishing in 15th place with 39 points from 35 games, while Brentford climb to ninth, just one point behind eighth-placed Bournemouth.
