The Cleveland Browns entered the offseason with some major needs to address, but none was as big as their need for a quarterback.
They traded for Kenny Pickett early in the offseason before signing Joe Flacco.
Then, they doubled down by taking two QBs in the 2025 NFL Draft.
With that in mind, Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports argued that selecting one of those was their “best offseason move.”
“Drafting Shedeur Sanders at No. 144 overall,” Sullivan wrote. “Leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders was expected to be a first-round pick, and some wouldn’t have even batted an eye if Cleveland selected him at No. 2 overall. Instead, Sanders now famously fell out of Day 1 and Day 2 altogether before the Browns stopped his fall at No. 144 overall. If Sanders can prove his doubters wrong and become the type of first-round talent he was once projected as, this is a home run. At the very least, it’s a worthwhile gamble when considering where the Browns took him.”
If Sanders turns out to be a franchise quarterback, they would have the advantage of a team-friendly and cost-efficient contract for a few years.
On top of that, they would get incredible value from his draft slot.
On paper, Sanders seems to have the highest upside among the options at quarterback.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be ahead of anybody in the pecking order, which makes sense, given that he was the last quarterback to enter the race, following the two veterans and third-round pick Dillon Gabriel.
Sanders has turned plenty of heads during the offseason, and some argue that he’s looked the best of all the Browns’ quarterbacks at early practices.
Then again, the coaching staff has yet to give him a chance to prove his worth against the starters.
Hopefully, the best player will win this QB competition, regardless of where he was drafted or how he made his way to the team.
