Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has played down speculation linking him with the Real Madrid job, insisting it is “not a good time” to talk about his future.
The 43-year-old Spaniard has been heavily linked as a possible successor to Carlo Ancelotti, should the Italian step down at the end of the season. Alonso’s reputation has skyrocketed after a remarkable first full season in charge, guiding Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a German Cup triumph.
“It’s not a good time to discuss the future. We’re at a very important moment in the season,” Alonso told reporters.
“I don’t want to talk about speculation and rumours. I understand that this is happening, but what’s more important to me is what’s happening right now.”
Leverkusen are currently six points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with five games remaining as they push to retain their domestic title.
Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro echoed Alonso’s sentiment last week, stating the manager is “comfortable” at the club and actively planning for next season.
Alonso, a former midfield maestro for both Liverpool and Real Madrid, enjoyed a decorated playing career. He won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League during six years in Madrid from 2009 to 2014 before finishing his playing days at Bayern Munich in 2017.
He began his coaching journey with Real Madrid’s Under-14 team, then spent three years in charge of Real Sociedad’s B side.
Alonso was appointed Bayer Leverkusen head coach in 2022 and led the team to a sixth-place finish that season before orchestrating an extraordinary domestic double in 2023/24.
Alonso also guided Leverkusen to the UEFA Europa League final, where they suffered their only defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss to Atalanta, ending an incredible 53-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
