Umo Eno, governor of Akwa Ibom State, has sparked speculation about a potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general election, likening the party to a malfunctioning aircraft.
Speaking on Tuesday during the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency town hall meeting at QIC Central School, Ikot Akpankuk, the governor emphasised that effective governance should take precedence over party affiliation.
“What Akwa Ibom people desire is good governance—not necessarily the name of the political party,” Eno stated. “If you’re about to travel with Ibom Air and the aircraft develops a fault that prevents it from flying, wouldn’t you board the next available plane to reach your destination? Whether it’s Ibom Air or Air Peace, take the flight that is ready to move. Forget the name—focus on the destination.”

The comment comes amid a wave of defections from the PDP, most notably by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with his supporters.
Eno expressed concern over the internal divisions plaguing the PDP, warning that the party may not survive intact by the time the 2027 elections arrive.

Despite the uncertain political climate, he urged constituents to remain committed to his administration’s development agenda and pledged to continue delivering on his campaign promises.
As part of his visit, the governor distributed empowerment packages to over 400 beneficiaries. These included business grants, vehicles, and other forms of support aimed at improving livelihoods and stimulating local enterprise.
