Uber driver nearly hit by bullets after shots fired on Salem street

No one was injured in the shooting, but Salem police said they believe that the attack was not random.

Police are investigating after shots were fired on a street in Salem early Monday morning, the department said.

At about 6:55 a.m., officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired on Albion Street and found evidence of gunfire, Salem police said in a statement. The suspects had fled the scene, but police asked the public to stay away from the area while detectives and State Police gathered evidence.

An Uber driver told NBC10 Boston that he and his vehicle were shot at by three men as his three passengers were getting into the vehicle, and a bullet went through his car’s windshield.

“Nobody hit, despite quite a few shots fired,” Dinois Ribas, the Uber driver, told NBC10 Boston. “It was really luck that saved everybody.”

No one was injured, and police said that there is currently no threat to the public, but they believe that the attack was not random, according to the statement.

“Gunplay on the streets of Salem is unacceptable, and our detectives will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice,” police said in the statement.

Witnesses are asked to call police with any information about the shooting at 978-744-1212 or call the anonymous tip line at 978-619-5627.
