President Donald Trump turned around and shook hands with a smiling Mookie Betts during the Dodgers’ visit to the White House on Monday.
Since leaving the Red Sox, Betts has won two World Series titles with the Dodgers, bringing his total to three.
Los Angeles triumphed over the New York Yankees in last year’s Fall Classic. Betts was instrumental throughout the playoff run, batting .290, hitting four home runs, and tallying 16 RBIs during last year’s postseason.
“Oh is he good!” Trump explained before he walked over to Betts. Then, he walked back over to the lectern and talked about the mistake the Red Sox made when they traded him to the Dodgers in 2020.
“Mookie, that guy can play, can’t he?” Trump said. “I mean, unbelievable. I don’t want to say I watched him when he was on Boston, but I did. I didn’t think that was a particularly good trade when they made it, and I happened to be right.”
All four of Betts’s All-MLB First-Team appearances came after he was traded to the Dodgers. Half of his eight All-Star appearances have come in a Dodger uniform. He clubbed a career-high 39 home runs with for Los Angeles in 2023.
Meanwhile, Conor Wong remains the only player the Red Sox got in return for Betts that is still on Boston’s roster. Alex Verdugo signed with the Braves after a lackluster season with the Yankees. Jeter Downs hasn’t played in the Major Leagues since 2023.
Betts is batting .313 through eight games this season. He has three home runs and seven RBIs.
