“When the miles get tough, we’ll think of Spaulding’s patients…that will be all the motivation we need to keep going.”

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. Looking for more race day content? Sign up for Boston.com’s pop-up Boston Marathon newsletter.

[For] Lena and I, running the Boston Marathon is about more than just the miles. It’s about who we’re running for. This year, we’re proud to support Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a place where survivors of strokes, spinal cord injuries, and life-altering accidents fight to regain their strength.

We run for those who can’t. Spaulding’s patients show resilience every day, pushing through challenges most of us can’t imagine. Their determination inspires us, and we want to give back by raising funds to support their recovery journeys.

But this race is also about setting an example for the next generation—showing kids that hard work, perseverance and helping others matter. Training for a marathon isn’t easy, but nothing worth achieving ever is. Whether it’s running 26.2 miles or supporting someone in need, making a difference takes commitment and heart.

On race day, when the miles get tough, we’ll think of Spaulding’s patients—those fighting to walk again, to regain their independence. That will be all the motivation we need to keep going.
