The Red Sox game was briefly interrupted by a…noise?

Red Sox game briefly interrupted: It’s not often that fans of both teams are moved to cheer at the same thing during a baseball game, but one such moment occurred during Tuesday’s Red Sox-Rays matchup.

Played inside the unusual venue of Steinbrenner Field — the Rays’ 2025 home due to damage done to Tropicana Field by Hurricane Milton in 2024 — the game appeared to be on a completely routine course. But in the bottom of the second innings, with the Red Sox leading 3-1, a high-pitched noise began sounding throughout the ballpark.

“There’s a little buzz in the ballpark, and it’s not the fans,” noted Rays play-by-play commentator Dewayne Staats.

Very quickly, the ringing noise became an unavoidable distraction for fans, players, and (eventually) umpires, who stopped the game briefly.

“They’ve halted played trying to figure out if that buzz will subside,” said Staats.

The moment was resolved when stadium personnel got a handle on the noise and figured out a way to shut it off. The result produced a spontaneous round of applause from fans of both teams, and the game quickly resumed. The Red Sox won it in the end, 7-4.

It’s not clear exactly what caused the incident. The Rays have taken the chance to switch up the stadium soundtrack in a different venue so far in 2025, mostly to fans’ general approval. Clearly the staff is still working out some of the finer details of the ballpark’s infrastructure.

Here’s video of the excruciating moment, which (as might seem predictable) includes an extremely high-pitched, obnoxious noise:

Trivia: On topic off George Steinbrenner, he was once banned for life from running the Yankees (though he was reinstated three years later) for paying gambler Howie Spira to dig up dirt on what Hall of Fame player?

(Answer at the bottom).

Hint: After being drafted by the Padres, he was one of a small number of baseball players to be promoted directly to the Major League level as a rookie.

Scores and schedules:

The Red Sox got a 7-4 win over the Rays in Tampa on Tuesday. The two teams play again this evening at 7:05 p.m.

Also from Tuesday, the Bruins lost the team’s season finale 5-4 against the Devils in overtime.

The Celtics’ first-round playoff schedule: Boston will open its title defense against the Orlando Magic.

A bizarre outcome: Even after more than 200,000 games in MLB history, weird and original things still occasionally happen.

On this day: In 2007, amid a Red Sox-Angels game on Patriots’ Day, we were gifted an iconic moment: “Here comes the pizza.”

Daily highlight: Ceddanne Rafaela made this highlight-worthy catch look almost routine.
