Southampton’s Knowledge 2 festival returned to Hoglands Park

Date:

The atmosphere was electric, with crowds of enthusiastic teenagers and young adults drawn to a spectacular showcase of talent and positive activities.

The park throbbed with infectious beats as gravity-defying break dancers mesmerised onlookers with their skilful moves, while a lineup of talented local DJS provided a pulsating soundtrack for the day.

This was the second such event to grace the city, building on the success of the previous month’s “Knowledge 2” day, which had already attracted an impressive 500 visitors.

This weekend’s iteration saw that enthusiasm swell, with an estimated 600 young people immersing themselves in the festivities.

The K2 festival provided experiences, exhilarating live music and diverse entertainment with engaging arts and sports activities.

Beyond the sheer fun, a significant aspect of the event was the array of information stalls.

These provided a crucial touchpoint for attendees, offering friendly advice and vital support on a range of important topics including sexual health, personal safety, navigating relationships, and fostering mental health and well-being.

The musical landscape was particularly vibrant, featuring the sun-drenched rhythms of the Caribbean Lites Steel band.

Adding to the auditory feast were twelve of the city’s own DJs and MCs, who skillfully mixed a diverse range of genres, from the infectious beats of Bhangra and Reggae to the urban sounds of Garage, Hip Hop, and high-energy Drum and Bass, ensuring every musical taste was catered for.

Community spirit shone brightly, with more than 60 individuals actively participating in activities organised by the local charity Honey Pot, an organisation dedicated to supporting young parents.

The creative flair of the city’s youth was also on full display as graffiti artists made their distinctive mark.

They collaborated on a giant, expressive art piece, designed to complement a similar impressive banner produced during May’s event.

That earlier 20ft by 8ft graffiti creation, a product of young people’s collective effort, was destined for display in Queensway, aiming to inject colour and positivity into areas with boarded-up shops.

This impactful series of events was masterfully staged through a collaboration between Southampton City Council’s dedicated City Youth Service and the Southampton Voluntary Service project, Safe in Sound.

The success of the K2 festival was further bolstered by the support of the youth charity No Limits and various local commercial sponsors.

Crucial funding, underpinning the event’s ability to offer such a wide array of free activities and support, was also provided by the Central Neighbourhood Partnership and the Southampton Primary Care Trust.

At the time, anticipation was already building for the third and final festival in this popular series, which was scheduled to make its return to the welcoming green space of Hoglands Park on July 30th, promising another exciting opportunity for Southampton’s young people to connect, learn, and celebrate.
