The ten-year initiative, shaped by input from nearly 4,000 residents, local businesses, and community groups, aims to make Southampton more equal, healthier, safer, greener, and economically thriving.
At the core of the Southampton 2035 Plan is a commitment to building a more equal city by addressing the life chances of residents.
The plan outlines five missions centred on equality, health, safety, sustainability, and economic growth.
It focuses on reducing violent crime, including domestic abuse, youth violence, and violence against women, as well as addressing the root causes of poor health and integrating health and social care.
The city’s sustainability drive includes achieving net zero status, reducing carbon emissions, and boosting sustainable travel.
Councillor Alex Winning, leader of Southampton City Council, said: “The Southampton 2035 Plan is built on the voices of our residents, and I want to thank every single person who took the time to share their views.
“I feel incredibly proud and fortunate to serve this city.
“This plan is a commitment from the council and our partners to make Southampton a city where everyone, regardless of their background, can live well, feel safe, and achieve success.”
The formation of the plan was driven by insights from the recent city survey, which invited residents, businesses, and visitors to share their experiences, priorities, and hopes for the city’s future.
The survey highlighted aspects of the city that currently satisfy residents, such as green spaces and job satisfaction, and pointed to areas needing improvement.
According to the survey, 75 per cent of respondents said Southampton is good for green spaces, with 74 per cent satisfied with parks and play areas.
The majority of residents feel a sense of belonging and believe people from different backgrounds get along well.
The same survey also revealed the importance residents place on Southampton’s becoming healthier, safer, more environmentally friendly, affordable, and prosperous.
The council’s plan was approved at a full council meeting on July 16, with citywide partners pledging to work together to bring the vision to life.
