Shop Stab blends Nigerian heritage with bold global fashion statement


At just 25, Nigerian designer Ben Sonia is redefining fashion through Shop Stab, a label that merges traditional Nigerian elements with modern silhouettes to create bold, elegant, and globally resonant pieces.

Sonia’s journey into fashion began in her teenage years, sparked by a fascination with the way clothing could tell stories. Though she holds a science degree from Babcock University, she pursued her passion for design, honing her skills in fashion illustration and pattern drafting.

The brand name, Shop Stab, evolved from a personal nickname and was designed to be both edgy and accessible. She described the brand’s identity as one rooted in individuality, storytelling, and confidence, designed for women who want to look “powerful, graceful, and unique.”

Sonia said her designs often blend fabrics like adire and aso-oke with subtle cultural references, reimagined in contemporary forms. Her creative process starts with a message or memory, then evolves through mood boards, sketches, and fittings, resulting in collections that are both expressive and wearable.

She noted that sustainability plays a key role in the brand’s ethos, with a focus on made-to-order production and reducing waste. “To me, sustainability means thoughtfulness,” Sonia explained. “It’s not just about fabric; it’s about how we produce and the values behind every stitch.”

Despite challenges such as power outages, supply chain issues, and limited access to skilled labour, Sonia has grown Shop Stab into a rising force. She believes these hurdles have sharpened her resilience and creative thinking.

Looking ahead, she envisions Shop Stab on global runways while remaining deeply rooted in African storytelling. “We want to build a community, not just a brand,” she said.
