What do barbecue, bar mitzvahs and the New York Times crossword puzzle have in common? They all came into play when Seth Meyers kicked off opening night of the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas. As the Late Night host sat down on stage at the Paramount on Thursday evening, moderator Michael Schneider asked him if he’d been to Austin before and hilarity ensued.
Seth Meyers Kicks Off ATX TV Festival
While sipping on a cocktail, Seth Meyers settled in to chat about “Late Nights, Day Drinking, and Closer Looks,” a session presented by NBCUniversal. Who would’ve thought a portmanteau would play a part in the convo? But, alas, it did. Here’s why.
After mentioning that he had been to Austin and performed at the Paramount many times, Meyers stated that he most recently enjoyed barbecue in the ATX while in town for a bar mitzvah. “I got deep into some barbecue,” the comedian said.

He went on to crack a joke about combining the two activities, stating, “It was a barbe-mitzvah,” followed by a warning. “Nobody steal that,” he giggled while pointing to the audience.
When Schneider pointed out that he’s already working new material, Meyers replied, “I love a good portmanteau.” And why does he know that word, he asked the audience? The New York Times crossword, of course.
