Report: Gregg Popovich suffers medical emergency while at restaurant

Date:

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich reportedly suffered another medical emergency on Tuesday night.

According to a report from TMZ, Popovich left in an ambulance after dining at a steakhouse in the San Antonio, Texas, area. First responders said they were called to the scene after receiving a call that an elderly person fainted at the restaurant.

A video obtained by TMZ claimed to show Popovich on a stretcher and being placed into the back of an ambulance. The 76-year-old was said to be alert and talking by the team he was transported.

Popovich has not coached the Spurs since he suffered a stroke in November. He told players in February that he would not return during the 2024-25 season.

There have been reports that Popovich is not certain to return to coaching at all, though he has not made any firm statements about his future.

The Spurs finished 34-48 this season and missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year. Star big man Victor Wembanyama played in 46 games before being ruled out for the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder.

Popovich has been the head coach of the Spurs since 1996-97. The five-time NBA champion is the winningest coach in league history, with 1,390 victories to his name.
