Reds OF is the only player since 1900 with this impressive feat

Date:

Cincinnati Reds right fielder Rece Hinds has made limited starts the last two seasons, but his impact has certainly been felt on the field and in the record books.

Of his 15 career hits, Hinds has 13 extra-base hits, making him the only player since 1900 to record that many extra-base hits at that point, per the Reds.

Hinds has only appeared in six games this season and 30 total going back to the 2024 campaign. After hitting .261 and producing five home runs, 11 RBI, four doubles and one triple in 24 starts last season, Hinds has already made an impact this season in a fourth of those starts since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville in May.

In just six games, Hinds has two homers and three RBI this season. His home run in Saturday’s 4-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians contributed to the team’s three-game sweep over its rivals and the fourth straight win overall for the Reds.

His 2025 batting average (.176) is not great, but his impact has still been felt in limited starts.

In addition to Hinds, an encouraging sign for Cincinnati has been its pitching. While the Reds have struggled with consistency on the mound in recent years, this year’s team is tied for ninth with the New York Yankees in Earned Run Average (3.58), per TeamRankings.

Hinds is not the only Reds player to make history this season. Look no further than one week ago when shortstop Elly De La Cruz became the first player since 1900 with 115 extra-base hits and stolen bases in his first 300 games.

The Reds continue to showcase their potential, but sustaining their momentum from the weekend sweep of the Guardians is key if they are going to be true contenders. If Hinds can take advantage of his opportunity, he has already proved how valuable he can be to the team with his power at the plate.

Cincinnati (24-24) will try to get back above .500 for the first time since May 4 when it travels to Pittsburgh for a three-game series with the Pirates starting on Monday night (6:40 p.m. ET, FS1).
