“It has brought back very painful memories for Tasmanians,” Premier Jeremy Rockliff wrote in an open letter on Sunday, one week after the antisemitic atrocity at Bondi — now Australia’s second-most deadly mass shooting event after the Port Arthur massacre. While the two events are very different, there is one crucial similarity: both were attacks on a small population that would go on to have a huge national impact. The anger and fear within the Jewish community are immense.
