Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the last general elections, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a moral compass whose influence transcended religious and national boundaries.
The Vatican on Monday announced the death of Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a heartfelt tribute on his X account titled “Pope Francis: a Moral Compass in a Troubled World,” Obi praised the Pope’s legacy of humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and peace.
“I received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis,” Obi said. “His death marks the end of another era in the spiritual and moral leadership of the Catholic Church and the wider world.”

Obi, who noted that he had the privilege of meeting the Pope on three occasions, reflected on the pontiff’s embodiment of “faith, hope, and compassion” throughout his life and leadership. “He led with humility, spoke with wisdom, and acted with moral courage,” he said. “He constantly strove to draw humanity closer to the ideals of peace, justice, and love.”
The former governor also highlighted Pope Francis’ global influence, particularly his commitment to uplifting the poor and defending human dignity. “His deep concern for the poor, his steadfast advocacy for moral leadership, and his defence of human dignity earned him the admiration of people across all faiths and nations,” Obi added.
As a member of the Scholas Occurrences Foundation, an educational and youth-focused initiative established by Pope Francis, Obi acknowledged the late Pope’s investment in the next generation. “I deeply appreciate his belief in education, dialogue, and youth empowerment as vital instruments for building a more just and compassionate world,” he said.
He praised the Pope’s lifelong dedication to God and humanity, asserting that his legacy would endure in the hearts of the faithful and the broader global conscience. “In an age marked by division and uncertainty, his voice remained a steady call to unity, mercy, and justice,” Obi remarked.
Concluding his tribute, Obi extended condolences on behalf of himself, his family, and “millions of Nigerians who found inspiration in his teachings and example.”
“May God, in His infinite mercy, grant eternal rest to his gentle soul and guide the Church he so lovingly shepherded,” he said.
