If Patriots opt to trade Joe Milton, Cowboys tabbed as ‘team to watch’ by NFL insider
The Patriots are sending quarterback Joe Milton and a seventh-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Milton’s start in New England’s season-finale win against Buffalo was his only appearance of the season. He went 22-for-29 for 241 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.
It was an opportunity for Milton to showcase his skills, and he succeeded in drawing trade interest from multiple teams. The Patriots are set with Drake Maye as their starting quarterback, and they signed Josh Dobbs as a reserve during the offseason. Last season, the Patriots had a crowded quarterback room too, with Maye, Jacoby Brissett, and Milton.
Two qualities that may have intrigued Dallas are Milton’s size and arm strength. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 246 pounds. He has an extremely strong arm. He would routinely perform backflips during Patriots training camp last summer.
The season-finale performance also showed that Milton can move and make plays outside of the pocket. Completing north of 75 percent of his passes showed that he is capable of throwing with accuracy at times.
New England selected Milton in the sixth-round of last year’s draft. They were able to move up and snag another fifth-round pick with this trade. With Maye and Dobbs on the roster, the Patriots could be in the market for a third-string quarterback.
