PalmPay’s contactless payment aims to break cash dependency

PalmPay is accelerating its push to end Nigeria’s cash habit by rolling out contactless‑enabled payment terminals and cards nationwide.

Through a new partnership with AfriGO, a subsidiary of the Nigeria Inter‑Bank Settlement System, the fintech will issue over 5 million AfriGO contactless payment cards targeting the unbanked.

“Financial inclusion is central to everything we do,” said Ifeanyi Uzoka, Senior Business Development Manager at PalmPay at BusinessDay’s Future of Payment Conference.

“That’s why we’ve launched contactless‑enabled debit and premium cards so our users can enjoy fast, secure transactions. We’ve also built in an extra layer of authentication on every tap to foster trust.”

Co‑branded with Verve, PalmPay’s debit and premium cards already serve more than 35 million customers and are accepted at all major terminals across Nigeria. The AfriGO card further bridges the gap between cash and digital finance by enabling both debit and tap‑and‑go payments for those previously excluded from formal banking.

This initiative is part of PalmPay’s evolution from a mobile wallet and agent network into a full‑service digital bank offering payments, savings, credit, insurance and card solutions.

According to Chika Nwosu, the fintech’s managing director, the company is harnessing technology to deepen financial accessibility and move Nigeria one step closer to a cashless future.
