Matalan to replace Next in West Quay Retail Park within days

Fashion and homeware retailer Matalan will move into a vacant building in the retail park on Pirelli Street after its previous store on Harbour Parade closed on August 9.

The brand will move into a huge 15,000 square foot outlet which has sat empty since competitor Next closed its homeware store on March 11, 2023.

When the store opened back in the summer of 2010, it was heralded as the biggest new store opening of the year by Next, but now Matalan will take its place years later.

“We’re incredibly excited to open the doors to our brand new store at West Quay Retail Park,” Southampton store manager Victoria O’Neill said.

“This move marks an exciting new chapter for Matalan in Southampton, bringing a refreshed shopping experience designed for the whole family.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming back our loyal customers and introducing new shoppers to everything the store has to offer.”

The opening day on Saturday will feature local entertainment from a DJ, face painting, balloon modelling and special giveaways.

Matalan’s new store is expected to feature a full offering of products across all departments.

This includes womenswear, menswear, children’s clothes and homeware.

Womenswear will take over the entire ground floor and the new shop will feature a brand-new “service hub”, with relocated tills and fitting rooms at the front of the store.

A click-and-collect service for online orders will also be available.

A spokesperson for Matalan said: “Whether shoppers are refreshing their wardrobe with new-season staples or getting organised for the busy Back to School period, the store is perfectly set up to meet every need – all under one roof.”

Matalan is not the only national brand moving to West Quay Retail Park, as Smyths Toys is expected to open a superstore in the former Poundland unit in the near future.

Plans were lodged and approved to expand the mezzanine storage area at the back of the old budget retailer site, which sits between Currys and Furniture Village.

The budget supermarket closed down on June 9, but an application to add to the storage area to support the Smyths move was filed on May 15.
