Mani Ratnam and Kamal Hassan’s newest film is expected to face a huge loss after the language. Read on to know how much.

Following massive controversy and intense political drama, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life finally released on June 5. However, except in Karnataka, the film is being screened all over India. Due to this, it is expected that the film will face a huge loss.

According to a report in The Hindu, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life might see a hefty loss of up to Rs 40 crore as the film’s release deals with the aftermath of Kamal Haasan’s controversial Tamil-Kannada remark, due to which the release of the film is put in a limbo in Karnataka. Producer and Distributor G. Dhananjayan recently shared with the media that the Kamal Haasan film will miss out on about Rs 35 to Rs 40 crore gross at the box office and Rs 12 to Rs 15 crore share to the producer due to the blockage of the film in Karnataka. Dhananjayan said, “With the four Telugu films grossing a total of ₹5832 crore, the Karnataka box office revenue alone amounts to ₹391.20 crore, while the North Indian market accounts for ₹2361.60 crore. The Karnataka market accounts for around 7% of the total revenue.”

For the unversed, Thug Life is a film directed by Mani Ratnam; the movie’s lead actor, Kamal Haasan, is a well-known name in the Indian film industry. The film recently found itself in the middle of a controversy after, at a launch event in Karnataka, Kamal Haasan said, “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” This statement from the popular actor triggered a lot of backlash from the local fans, and the film’s release in Karnataka was opposed by the local film body.

Concerning this, Kamal Haasan moved to the Karnataka High Court. However, when he was asked to apologize for the statement by the High Court, the actor refused to do so and agreed not to release his film in the state.
