Officers on patrol in Southampton received reports of the man with the weapon at Westquay by security staff on Friday.
The man in question was shortly apprehended by police and arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public space.
The knife was confiscated, and the man is currently in custody.

Earlier that day, police arrested two men on suspicion of possessing a controlled Class A drug and being concerned in the supply of a Class A drugs.
A 46-year-old man from Ryde, Isle of Wight, and a 22-year-old man from Birmingham were detained at St Mary’s Place in Southampton around 1.30pm.
Police also seized mobile phones and cash during the operation.
Both suspects remain in police custody.
The task force is continuing its operations in the city centre, confirmed a spokesperson for Hampshire police.
