Date:

Plumes of black smoke could be seen near the M27 earlier today.

A large blaze broke out at Tynefield Caravan Park which is home to several derelict buildings.

This is the second fire that has occurred at the park on Whiteley Lane near Segensworth after flames engulfed two caravans at the traveller site in January.

In a post on social media, a spokesperson for Whiteley Town Council said: “A fire broke out at the Tynefield Caravan Park today, but luckily some amazing kids who were passing stopped to call 999.

“Thanks to your help, the fire service was able to get there quickly and get things under control.

“If you’re a parent to one of these lads, they were helpful, polite and responsible.

“Really amazing, be proud of them.”

They added: “The council has asked Winchester City Council to issue an order to force the landowner to clear the area, but it was turned down.”

Hampshire fire service has been contacted for more information.

The site was owned by Hampshire County Council until it was sold to a private landlord in 2015.
