DeKalb County’s oldest Black neighborhood, Lynwood Park, is celebrating the 47th Lynwood Park Community Day on Saturday, May 3 from 12 to 6 p.m. in Brookhaven.

A parade from Lynwood Park Church, 1424 Windsor Road, to Lynwood Park Recreation Center, 3360 Osborne Road, will kick off the day of music, food, and community. The Grand Marshall is Tom Jones of WSB-TV.

Guests include the Cross Keys High School marching band, the Atlanta Corvette Society, the Alpha Beta Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and the Black Cowboys.

Established in the early 1930s, Lynwood Park was the first predominantly Black neighborhood in DeKalb County. Lynwood Community Center was once Lynwood Park Elementary and High School, home of the Lynwood Rattlers.

In 1968, following years of discrimination and segregation, a group of students known as the Lynwood Trailblazers entered the previously segregated DeKalb County School System. In 2020, Brookhaven City Council members approved an official historic designation for Lynwood Park – the first historic designation made by the city.

“The Lynwood Park Community Day celebration has been a beloved tradition for over four decades, drawing many participants from our community and beyond, all connected by deep roots to this historic neighborhood. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of festivities while honoring the rich heritage of Lynwood Park,” said Brookhaven City Council member Michael Diaz.

Lynwood Park Community Day is free and open to the public. Organizers are encouraging festival goers to park and walk from Little Zion Baptist Church, Legacy Alive MFB Church, Lynwood Park UCOGIC, or the Lynwood Park Foundation nursery.
