The prestigious 1952 Gallery in Lagos has hosted the Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art, a celebration of West Africa’s vibrant creative talent, where three African artists won a total $10,000.
BusinessDay reports that the event not only honour the outstanding artists, but also reinforced the crucial role of the arts in regional economic and cultural development.
At the ceremony, Nigerian artist Chinecherem Peace emerged as the grand prize winner, receiving a cash award of $5,000. Senegalese artist Djibril Coulibaly was named first runner-up, earning $3,000, while Ghana’s Moses Adjel secured the second runner-up prize of $2,000.

More than just financial rewards, the Kuenyehia Prize offers vital platforms for visibility, helping West African artists establish a stronger presence on the global stage.
Chinecherem Peace’s win reflects the growing strength of Nigeria’s contemporary art scene and its contribution to global artistic conversations.
Speaking at the event, Bolaji Abiola, Group Head of Private Banking at Access Bank, reiterated the bank’s commitment to empowering Nigerian artists.
“Our strategy is twofold: to generate revenue for artists while promoting Nigerian culture internationally,” Abiola said. This approach highlights art’s dual role—as an economic driver and a medium for cultural diplomacy—further positioning Nigeria within the global creative economy”, he said.

Art as an Engine for Economic Growth
Barbara Entee, Head of the Chancery at the Republic of Ghana, emphasised art’s transformative power.
“Art is not just about creativity; it is a tool for economic growth and global connectivity,” she stated. Her remarks reflect the increasing recognition of Africa’s creative industries as essential to continental integration and international collaboration.
Ejike Egbuagu, a lead organiser of the exhibition, described the initiative’s broader mission.
“Our goal is to provide artists with clarity about their position in local and international markets, and to equip them with the networks and knowledge needed to succeed,” he said.
