Jonny Evans retires and takes new role at Man United

Date:

England defender Jonny Evans has announced his retirement from professional football and will begin a new role at Manchester United as the club’s Head of Loans and Pathways.

The 37-year-old, who won three Premier League titles during his first spell at Old Trafford, confirmed the news on Monday, bringing an end to a distinguished career that also included over 100 international appearances for Northern Ireland.

“I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead,” Evans said in a heartfelt statement.

Evans’ second spell at Manchester United came to a close at the end of the 2024/25 season, after initially rejoining the club on a short-term deal. A product of United’s famed academy, Evans also enjoyed successful stints with West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, where he won the FA Cup and two League Cups.

Now transitioning into off-field duties, Evans is completing his coaching qualifications and stepping into a key developmental role within United’s football structure. As Head of Loans and Pathways, he will oversee the progress of emerging talents across loan spells and ensure alignment with the club’s long-term player development strategies.

“Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players,” said Man United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox.

“His knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.”

Evans’ wealth of experience and deep understanding of the club’s culture are expected to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of talent at Old Trafford.
