Jamie Vardy nets 199th Leicester Goal as Foxes beat Southampton 2-0

Date:

Jamie Vardy scored his 199th goal for Leicester City to help the Foxes beat bottom side Southampton 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy, who will end his 13-year stay with Leicester when his contract expires this summer, has three games remaining to reach the 200-goal milestone. The former England striker rifled a powerful shot into the roof of the net after 17 minutes, registering Leicester’s first home Premier League goal since 8 December.

Leicester doubled their lead before the break through Jordan Ayew, who tucked in a well-struck half-volley after his initial free-kick rebounded off the Southampton wall.

Ayew had earlier been involved in a bizarre incident when he unintentionally caught referee David Webb in the face. Webb, making his Premier League officiating debut, was forced off with an injury after receiving on-pitch treatment. Fourth official Sam Barrott took over after an 11-minute delay.

Leicester responded sharply after the restart, with Bilal El Khannouss earning the free-kick that led to Ayew’s goal.

Southampton offered little in attack and saw a potential goal ruled out when Paul Onuachu was deemed offside in the buildup to Mateus Fernandes’ effort.

The defeat confirms Southampton will finish bottom of the Premier League for a record-equalling third time, and they still require one more point to surpass Derby County’s all-time low of 11 points from the 2007/08 season.
