Imo Govt directs reopening of schools after diphtheria outbreak

Imo State Government has directed nursery, primary and secondary schools’ authorities in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area to reopen their schools which were shut down as a result of the outbreak of diphtheria disease which took some lives of innocent children.

The advice came from health authorities that battled with the killer disease who advised the government that diphtheria has been contained with, and allayed fears of further spread of the disease.

Consequent upon this, Iheukwumere Alaribe, a lawyer and chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Council, has therefore, conveyed the directive of the reopening of nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Aboh Mbaise Local Government with effect from June 11, 2025.

In a press release from his office he said that to “ensure a safe and healthy environment for all learners, the following guidelines must be strictly adhered to; that all learners must provide evidence of vaccination before being allowed to resume classes and that school heads and administrators must report any incident promptly to the relevant authorities.”

Alaribe further mandated the education secretary and all school heads to ensure strict compliance with the guidelines.

“Let’s work together to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our learners.

We appreciate the efforts of our health workers for their diligence in containing the diphtheria outbreak. We look forward to a successful and safe resumption of academic activities in our schools.”
