FCT teachers’ strike: Wike summons council chairmen, union leaders

Date:

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has summoned the chairmen of the FCT area councils and the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT wing, in a bid to resolve the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the nation’s capital.

Wike made the call on Thursday after inspecting projects ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary celebrations, describing the strike as unfortunate.

He criticised the area council chairmen for failing to pay teachers despite receiving over N4.1 billion specifically approved for their salaries.

According to him, “I have summoned all of them for a meeting. It’s disheartening that teachers who educate our children are being neglected.”

He said the funds were released, yet they weren’t paid. “If I apply the big stick, people will start complaining.”

Wike clarified that the responsibility for primary schools lies with the area councils, not the FCT Administration. He appealed to the teachers to be patient, assuring them that the issues would soon be resolved.

Earlier, Abdullahi Shafa, NUT Chairman, who led a protest at the FCTA Secretariat, accused the council chairmen of diverting the released funds. He called for intervention from the National Assembly and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), highlighting other unresolved issues, including non-payment of salary increases and the N35,000 wage award.

The strike action has drawn solidarity from other unions, including the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the FCT chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN).

The unions also protested the closure of over 270 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the FCT, demanding the immediate reopening of the facilities, payment of outstanding allowances, and implementation of a proposed N70,000 minimum wage.

James Medan, NANNM-FCT Chairman, expressed concern over the health crisis, citing rising maternal and child mortality and the disruption of a planned polio vaccination campaign. He warned that the continued shutdown of PHCs could worsen the situation.
