Easter Fun and Shiba Inu Reunion in Tucker

‘Everyone loves a dog story’

Apr. 12 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Tucker. In a sea of bad news, it’s always nice to write a story that involves all the elements of greatness – crime, heartbreak, redemption, and, of course, dogs.

💐 There’s also information about an event that celebrates your inner artist fighting to get out, an upcoming city council agenda item that is kind of mystifying and some outdoor events to enjoy in Tucker, if your sinuses can handle it.

Have a great weekend,
Cathy

A happy ending for this show dog

Little did Chantel Hunter know that when she found a flea-ridden, mostly furless dog wandering around a school garden in Tucker that it was a retired American Kennel Club Grand Champion Shiba Inu that had been stolen more than a year ago.

On April 7, Hunter, who was checking on plants in a garden at Turning Sun School’s Tucker Campus, said the friendly dog, now identified as Shogatsu, wandered up to her, dragging a frayed rope attached to his collar. Much of his backside was devoid of fur, and it was obvious that the dog was suffering.

Hunter called DeKalb County Animal Services, and the responding officer scanned it for an identifying microchip. Almost immediately, the dog’s identity and owner were found, ending a 13-month, heartbreaking search for the prize-winning six-year-old Shiba.

Read about the emotional reunion and the next steps for Shogatsu as he returns to health.

The slippery SLUP

🍾 The upcoming Tucker City Council meeting on April 21, has an agenda item that seems clear as mud, as we Boomers like to say.

Luxe Events is requesting a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) with three concurrent variances for the property located at 2101 Northlake Pkwy. to allow for a special event facility in the NL-1 (Northlake High-Intensity Commercial) zoning district.

Here’s the rub: LUXE Events has been operating at this site since the beginning of 2023, along with Fit Factory and SKRRT, in the same building. And add this to the mix – Tucker’s staff and the city’s planning commission are recommending some of the SLUP applications be approved, but not all.

And this on the narrative… “Staff met with the property owner, their leasing agent, and Luxe Events several times to discuss the SLUP process and the non-conforming use regulations in the zoning ordinance. However, it took until December of 2024 to get the applicant to submit a complete SLUP application. During this time, several other code violations had to be corrected by the property owner to bring the remaining parts of the property into compliance.”

🍿Monday’ meeting should be interesting. Here’s the council’s agenda.

We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy accidents

🖼️ Here’s another clash of two worlds that I so enjoy. Jeremy Rogers is a Dunwoody “kid” who is a Bob Ross-certified instructor. Side note: Funny how so many people fall into my “kid” category, even when they can shave, vote, drive, and procreate.

Rogers will be teaching an oil painting workshop in Tucker on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Kelley Cofer Peach Pit, 4359 N. Park Drive. The $60 price per person includes everything you will need to create a Henderson Park landscape.

I took one of Jeremy’s classes in Dunwoody and it was amazing to see the different artistic perspectives that evolved, even when we got the same step-by-step instructions.

The picture above, with me showing off my “pink sky” interpretation is proof that Jeremy is really good, but not a miracle worker
