Deion Sanders provides update on reported health problem

Date:

On Wednesday, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders provided an update after news broke that he was battling an unspecified health issue.

In a post on his X account, the 57-year-old coach wrote he’s “OKAY” and will reveal more about his health when he returns to Boulder soon. He also thanked supporters for their well wishes.

In a story published Tuesday, Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reported the Pro Football Hall of Famer was at his estate in Texas last week when the Buffaloes were starting their summer camp. Additionally, he canceled a speaking engagement in Florida at the Sickle Cell Disease Research and Educational Symposium on June 8.

This isn’t the first time Sanders has had a health problem. In June 2023, he underwent surgery to relieve blood clots in both of his legs, and in 2021, he had two toes on his left foot amputated because of complications from a previous surgery.

In May, on a podcast with former New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, Sanders said he had another health problem but didn’t say it was more blood clots.

At mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, Sanders’ son, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur, refused to discuss his father’s health problems.

When Deion Sanders returns to Boulder this fall, he’ll aim to keep rebuilding his program. After going 4-8 in its first season under the coach, Colorado went 9-4 last season, making its first bowl game since the 2020 season. The Buffaloes open their season against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Aug. 29.
