A Commuter Rail train collided with a tractor-trailer at a railroad crossing in Canton, causing traffic detours and rerouting for passengers Wednesday, fire officials said.

At about 1:40 p.m., firefighters responded to a crash at a railroad crossing on Pine Street in Canton, where a Stoughton Line train had run into a tractor-trailer, according to a statement from the Canton Fire Department.

“The truck was coming from Bolivar Street, driving along Pine Street, heading toward Stoughton, when the train hit the truck,” Canton Fire Chief Wendell Robery said in the statement. “Luckily, the driver is OK.”

A person on the train was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, according to the statement. The truck driver was unharmed, and a bus picked up the passengers aboard the train.

Canton Police officers responded to the scene and helped detour traffic around the railroad crossing. The police department closed Pine Street and said on Facebook that there was an “unknown timeframe on the reopening.”

MBTA Transit Police also responded and are investigating, according to the Canton Fire Department.

The MBTA announced on X that the train was “terminated near Stoughton due to police activity on the right of way.” They later posted that Stoughton Line trains would continue to run to and from Canton Center “until further notice” as shuttle buses brought passengers between the Stoughton and Canton Center stations.

“Let this serve as a reminder to pay close attention at Canton’s many railroad crossings,” Robery said in the statement. “Luckily, there were no major injuries this time, but this could have been much worse.”
