Chris Evans reveals he skipped the Cannes premiere of Honey Don’t! because it was his mum’s birthday

Date:

Fans were shocked when the cast of Honey Don’t! walked the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival, with one actor nowhere to be seen.

The film stars Aubrey Plaza, Margaret Qualley and Chris Evans, but only two of the three attended the premiere.

While Qualley and Plaza made headlines for their breathtaking red carpet looks, chatter online instead focused on the fact that Evans had opted to skip his first ever Cannes premiere.

Now, we know why.

When Qualley and Plaza walked the red carpet fans were outraged that Evans wasn’t by their side.

“Chris Evans skipped Cannes for no reason I’m sure,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter).

“F— Chris Evans for not attending at his own movie premiere at Cannes,” wrote another. “Unprofessional behaviour at it’s peak.”

But just one week after the event, Evans has taken to his Instagram stories to explain his absence, and those who hated on him for it will surely be eating their words.

”I wish I could’ve been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes,” he wrote alongside a photo of the Honey Don’t! cast and crew on the red carpet on his Instagram stories.

“But it was my mother’s 70th birthday and there are some things you just can’t miss!

“Congrats everyone.”

Evans has previously spoken about his relationship with his mum Lisa, affectionately referring to her as a “nut” in a 2020 interview with Esquire and sharing that she is often the one he will turn to for advice.

In that same interview, Lisa shared the advice that she gave her son after he initially turned down the role of Marvel’s Captain America out of fear of losing his anonymity.

“I said to him, ‘Look, you want to do acting work for the rest of your life? If you do this part, you will have the opportunity’,” she said.

“You’ll never have to worry about paying the rent. If you take the part, you just have to decide, ‘It’s not going to affect my life negatively – it will enable it’.”
