Bin fire causes gas leak in Southampton city centre

Firefighters and police officers were called to the High Street following reports of a fire last night.

At least three police cars and one police van were pictured at the scene alongside fire engines.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were alerted to a bin fire that caused a rupture in a gas supply unit.

A spokesperson said: “St Mary’s, Hightown and Eastleigh crews monitored the gas levels whilst assisting the evacuation of residents from surrounding properties.

“Gas engineers isolated and capped the supply, allowing residents to safely return.

“Crews left the scene shortly before 11pm.”
