Bassett Avenue: Pensioner in 90s escapes serious injury

Date:

Hampshire police was called at 1.41pm after receiving reports that a red Volkswagen Beetle had overturned on Bassett Avenue.

Fire services also attended the scene, due to concerns that there may have been “smoke coming from the vehicle involved”, as cones were placed near the car and traffic was guided around it.

The driver has now been confirmed to have been a pensioner in his 90s.

He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated in an ambulance at the scene.

A spokesperson from Hampshire police confirmed he did not require hospital treatment.

Fire services left the scene before officers did, as AA Traffic Map reported congestion on Bassett Avenue in the build up to Chilworth Roundabout.

A spokesperson from Hampshire fire said: “We were asked by police colleagues to attend an RTC on Bassett Avenue at just before 2pm because of concerns that there may be smoke coming from the vehicle involved.

“Firefighters from Eastleigh attended and thoroughly checked the vehicle, including carrying out thermal scanning, and no fire risk was found.”
