Avon Medical Practice, a 50-bed multi-specialty healthcare provider, has taken a significant step towards reducing the nation’s dependency on foreign medical treatment by unveiling a new ultra-modern healthcare facility in Lagos.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to conserve foreign exchange (FX) by offering high-quality medical services locally and reducing the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for healthcare.
On Monday, April 14, 2025, the organization is set to officially launch its state-of-the-art 25-bed medical facility to the public. The new centre is designed to provide advanced care across multiple specialties and is equipped with an accident and emergency unit, a specialised paediatric and intensive care unit, advanced diagnostic services featuring a new ultra-modern CT scan machine, and a fully equipped theatre for complex surgical procedures.
Speaking during a media tour of the facility in Lagos, Akinbiyi Oke, chief executive officer of Avon Medical Practice, noted the role the new hospital is poised to play in closing healthcare gaps in Nigeria. “We definitely can bridge some of the healthcare gaps,” he said. “It is much more expensive to travel and convert money into dollars or into pounds to get services now. I am sure there are people already looking inwards rather than travelling. I am sure we are in a position for that to happen.”
He explained that since its inception, Avon Medical has focused on building a people-first healthcare system that integrates innovation, empathy, and service excellence to improve access to quality medical care. According to Oke, the launch of the new facility marks a bold step in fulfilling that vision. “This space is not just about infrastructure, it’s about the experience. We’re expanding access to essential services like diagnostics, healthcare management, and renal care, while providing them in an environment that is both modern and welcoming.”
Oke described the new facility as a comprehensive healthcare hub featuring a diagnostic centre, outpatient and inpatient services, as well as specialised critical areas such as operating rooms, recovery units, delivery suites, neonatal intensive care units, and nurseries. The diagnostic centre, he noted, is equipped with laboratory services, a CT scan, and ultrasound machines. “We also have the accident unit. We are providing quality, affordable care,” he added.
He pointed out that what sets Avon apart is the deliberate focus on patient experience. “What we are going to be doing differently is to ensure that our patient experience is top-notch. We have put measures in place to make sure that patients can give us feedback, irrespective of whatever they have gone through, so that if there is any issue that needs to be managed or improved upon, we can work on that.”
Oke also revealed that Avon Medical is on the path toward obtaining healthcare quality accreditation, a move that underscores the company’s commitment to safety and excellence. “Patient experience is very key to us here in Avon Medical. In addition to that, we are currently on the journey of getting the accreditation for quality in healthcare, and that includes ensuring patient safety, ensuring that there are no unnecessary results of surgery, post-op surgery complications, neonatal complications, no falls, anything that can happen within the premises,” he said. “When we have any drug reaction, and if there is anything that can happen, we have collaborations with the necessary authorities to manage all those situations.”
Also speaking on the potential of the facility to reduce the incidence of medical tourism, Ejiro Nwachuku, consultant radiologist and head of Diagnostics and Dialysis Services at Avon Medical, said the facility is well-positioned to offer complex procedures that are typically sought abroad.
Meanwhile, Omotoke Okoro, head of human resources and admin at Avon, highlighted the organization’s commitment to creating a healthy and productive work environment for medical personnel.
