Advice and events from Dunwoody: A weekly roundup

Date:

I’m not the boss of you, but….

April 23 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. This week, I have the nerve to offer a plethora of bossy-pants advice, news about Steak and Grace, an update on the city’s electronic recycling event, and an opportunity for citizens to do a deep dive into the inner workings of the city.

Honestly, anyone who knows me well would say that I have a lot of nerve telling people what’s right or wrong. Once when I was about four, my mom warned me not to cross the street without asking. Then she saw me doing just that, with my hands covering my eyes. So nobody would see me.

“All-grown-up” Cathy still sees a glimmer of logic in this, which begs the question, “How are you still alive?”

👩🏽‍🦯‍➡️Happy Wednesday,
Cathy

Reflections at Two Bridges Park

🪞 On April 22, Dunwoody officials unveiled its latest art installation, this time at Two Bridges Park. The sculpture, called “Reflections,” continues the “D” theme that has been springing up in Dunwoody’s way-finding signage being installed around the area.

Here’s another bit of advice for kids, while I’m doling it out – don’t get any ideas from the grown man in the green shirt. Advice to parents: They will not listen.

🇩Here is an account of the unveiling and info about the park.

Sharp-dressed man or fashion ‘don’t’? You make the call

👟 Here’s a quick bit of advice: while burglarizing cars in Dunwoody residential areas on a Saturday afternoon, don’t make a fashion statement.

Dunwoody police arrested a distinctively dressed suspect (pictured above) on April 19 after reports of multiple car break-ins in the Peeler and Chamblee Dunwoody Road area. Not only was he charged with several counts of theft from vehicles, but social media commenters suggested additional charges should be levied for his inappropriate fit.

Many seemed particularly offended at the suspect’s out-of-season coat, since temperatures at the time of the arrest hovered around 85 degrees.

I showed this picture to a couple of millennials, who agreed that the outfit was pretty heinous, but added that his choice of shoes “slapped.” Full disclosure: I had to look that word up because, well, it meant something different back in the dark ages when I was cool.

👵🏼 Read about the arrest here.

200,000 reasons not to answer your phone

💰 While I’m giving out unsolicited advice, here’s another little gem. First, if someone calls you from Microsoft to tell you that your bank account is compromised, you should probably hang up.

Second, don’t get in your car, drive to your bank, take out $25,000 and convert it to Bitcoin. And third, don’t get in your car again and drive to the bank, wipe out your entire account, and buy gold bars.

And finally, don’t hand your treasure over to a guy who says he’s with the FBI. While this scam sounds like something your grandmother or great-grandmother might fall for, know that the victim in this case is 58 years old.

🐴 One last tip from atop my high horse, don’t wait three or four months to report the crime to the police. Here’s the whole sad story

Monarchs and Margaritas at Dunwoody Nature Center

🦋 On May 10, nature lovers can step into an evening of celebration at Monarchs & Margaritas, Dunwoody Nature Center’s signature fundraising event.

According to the DNC website, this year’s event highlights the connection to Mexico “where these remarkable pollinators complete incredible journeys each year.”

Patrons can enjoy “a night of exquisite flavors and cultural delights, featuring Mexican food, tequila tastings by Flecha Azul, live Mariachi music, auctions and raffles,” with the proceeds going towards helping sustain environmental education and conservation efforts.

🍸 While you are there, you may be able to check out the progress the DNC is making to restore its wetlands.  Also, you can buy tickets to the event here.

Recycle, eat, learn

♻️ The electronics recycling event at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church that had to be postponed from April 6 because of inclement weather has been rescheduled to May 18. You have to register in advance, but it looks like there are still slots available.

🥩 Steak and Grace, the ‘burbs’ newest restaurant (pictured above), is launching its lunch service, starting Friday, April 25. Weekend brunch service will be the next addition to the lineup, according to owner Barry Mills.

🚎 Want to make getting to know your city an all-day event? Then Dunwoody 101 is right up your alley. It’s a day-long exploration of Dunwoody City government, open to any of the city’s residents.

According to city officials, the inaugural class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30. The highlight of the program “will be a trolley ride to Dunwoody parks and new mixed-use developments, including High Street and Campus 244.” Residents will also tour the Dunwoody Police Department’s new Real-Time Crime Center, featuring a drone to aid in crime prevention and investigations.

If you are wavering, consider this: the class will visit Two Bridges Park to witness the grand opening of the splash pad, so bring your swim suit.

👙 The day will begin and end at Dunwoody City Hall, 4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road. Again, registering is a must, and you have to sign a photo release waiver.

🍋And finally, don’t forget Lemonade Days starts today and runs through the weekend. You might want to avoid North Peachtree Road starting about now.
