Wine-less Wednesday
April 2 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. I just got back from a wonderful weekend celebrating a friend’s 60th birthday (about time). I had so much fun that my liver put in its two-week notice on Monday. We are currently in negotiations.
🍾This week’s newsletter contains information about a joke, a disco party, a morning drive that went wrong, a new football coach for Dunwoody High School, and a big win by Dunwoody youngsters.
🏵️ Pollen: It’s what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner,
Cathy

IRL April Fool’s Day rocks
👯♀️ Say what you want about AI and Photoshop’s realism, there’s nothing that beats an April Fool’s Day joke that involves getting out of your car, like what happened yesterday in Dunwoody.
In the dead of the night, someone installed a sign advertising a new tenant at the Mt. Vernon Shopping Center – Oasis Goodtime Emporium, which contains all the elements that makes Dunwoody a great place to raise a family – cold beer, alcohol and naked women.
Everyone has their own idea about the identity of the April Fool, but I have confirmed that the logical choice, alas, is no longer participating. It’s great that someone is stepping up, because we all need a laugh and an opportunity to bash Dunwoody’s banks, signs, and urgent care facilities.
🃏You can find the story here, which recaps previous Dunwoody’s April Fool’s pranks throughout the years.

Spruill Artistic Affair throws back, moves forward
☮️ Last weekend, Spruill Center for the Arts threw it back to the 1970s at its annual Artistic Affair, and it was groovy to the nth degree with the crowd dressing in their finest disco-era fit.
I had to miss it for the aforementioned reasons, but its fundraising goal was crushed, $112,000 in donations for programing, including $18,500 that was raised by individual donors towards a year-long scholarship program for adults and children.
🎊 Lots of other announcements were made that night – read about the event here.

But I was only going one direction, officer
🏎️ It’s one thing to wake up a little foggy after a girl’s night out and decide to take it easy the next day, but nothing compares to waking up in your car in the middle of a major intersection and deciding to drive home on the wrong side of the road.
That’s what apparently happened just a stone’s throw from the Dunwoody Police Department. Asante Smith, 24, was charged with driving under the influence and other violations after he hit a police vehicle as he was traveling down the wrong side of Ashford Dunwoody Road.
The department received a call around 5 a.m. on March 30 about a driver in a Mercedes-Benz sedan who appeared to be asleep at the wheel while sitting at the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive. But then at some point, Smith allegedly woke up and decided to take the road less traveled.
🚨 Nobody was seriously injured, which was a Sunday miracle. Here’s the story.
😺 According to Score Atlanta, Dunwoody has found its 11th coach with Matthew Schmitz selected to lead the Wildcats’ football program.
Having served as the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach at Dunwoody for the last three seasons, Schmitz is very familiar with the team. He has had coaching experience in all levels of the sport, including a stint as a head coach at Newport High School in Kentucky and offensive coordinator spots at Clinton High School in Tennessee and Sickles High School in Tampa, FL.
🏉 In the college ranks, Schmitz has held positions such as passing game coordinator, running backs’ coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee Tech, quality control coach at UAB as well as quarterbacks’ coach at the US Merchant Marine Academy, according to the Max Wolborsky’s report

♟️Austin Elementary’s K-1 Chess team won the 2025 Georgia State Scholastic Tournament over the March 23 weekend. After placing third in last month’s state qualifier, Austin’s K-1 team went undefeated this time, beating five other teams at Sunday’s state final. Team members included Arlo Valentine, Chirantan Hallikeri, Nick Esposito, Jackson Phillips, and Shreyas Reddy Boorugu.
